Peace at what price and at whose expense?

Zippadee-doo-da, zippadee-yay, peace talks are starting on a wonderful September day! But wait, why aren't the Palestinians celebrating?

But never mind all that.

On September 1, there will be a dinner in the White House. Obama will be toasted for getting  Netanyahu and Abbas together to talk peace. A show of solidarity will be duly expressed by the presence of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and Middle East Envoy Tony Blair .

The real work will start on the next day, when the Israeli and Palestinian delegations get down to the nitty-gritty. With their starting positions poles apart, and Abbas threatening to walk if there is no construction freeze in the settlements, any potential peace deal seems little more than a fantasy of the Obama administration's creation.
