Park Your Car Here

Your car stolen? Carpark owners can now be held responsible. In Indonesia, that is.

The Supreme Court has just passed a verdict ruling that vehicle parking companies should be fully responsible for any car or motorcycle that is stolen in the building or compound of parking that they manage.

Jakarta is also pushing for parking companies to purchase insurance for all the vehicles that park in their property.

This decision is very fair because until now such parking companies have been charging cars and motorcycles an hourly parking rate, which they claim is only for the rental of parking space, not the security service which many vehicle owners assume they provide, given that they have a watchman post in place at several of these carparks.

The Association of Shopping Centers, obviously, is not happy with this verdict. They say the parking companies only provide parking spaces and that the parking companies do their best to prevent any vehicles from getting stolen, but cannot be asked to be responsible for them.

In connection with this verdict, the government of Jakarta plans to amend its by-law regarding parking security. It is also pushing for parking companies to purchase insurance for all the vehicles that park in their property.
