Barack Obama wins the presidency. The shift of focus from Iraq to Afghanistan, as he wanted, is now almost confirmed to continue.

In Pakistan, General Petraeus meets the governor of the country's North West Frontier Province, Owais Ghani, and Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti. Bordering Afghanistan and predominantly Pushtun, the smallest of Pakistan's four provinces is ground zero of the US drone attacks and suspected hideout for Taliban and al-Qaeda elements.

He also takes a helicopter tour of the region and talks to the commanders of the Pakistani army’s 11th Corps and the Frontier Corps.

In Afghanistan, 40 people are killed was bombed by US Air Force attacks. Those counting say this is the sixth wedding party to make collateral damage since 2001.
